If you come mostly to Vohemar to walk its miles of exquisite beaches and enjoy the charm of its bay, its surroundings are also worth a look. Feel free to get away from the city and the sea to discover a completely different landscape, certainly less sandy, but representative of the richness of the Malagasy nature.
Daraina, a lively village and an ecotourism destination
Located 50 km north of Vohémar, on the road to Diego Suarez, Daraina is a small, welcoming village turned towards green and responsible tourism. The visit of the village and the surroundings will further enrich your trip on the Côte de la Vanille. Thanks to the actions and support of theNGO Fanamby Working for environmental conservation in Madagascar, ecotourism is on the right track, especially as the region has an exceptional forest ecosystem. Moreover, the Fanamby Telecentre in Daraina is open to tourists. But Daraina is above all an old village of gold diggers. You will be able to meet the traditional miners during a walk in the surrounding forests. During the dry season, a market atmosphere animates the village every Tuesday. This is the best time to discover local traditions and folklore.
Discovering the Daraina Forests
Despite its modest size, Daraina has green forests in its surroundings. Being located in the northeast of the island, the humidity of the region is sometimes important, which is why it is better to go there in the dry season, from May to November. Nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts will find their happiness, since Daraina is the starting point for fabulous hikes in the forest. The forest massifs of the village are besides the only sanctuary of the Propithecus tattersali or sifaka with golden crown. You can especially approach it in the forest of Bekaraoka, about thirty minutes from the village. A camping area has been set up for visitors. Further south, the dense forest of Binara contains an incredible diversity of fauna: reptiles, birds, golden-crowned propithecus, etc. The site is also home to a sacred waterfall and it is difficult not to be tempted by a swim in its natural pool.
